Klaus Lang's composition emblemata sonantes. is contemporary music for historical instruments and was written for the ensemble ĀRT HOUSE 17. The composition makes numerous references to art, music and intellectual history.
Firstly, it refers specifically to Gioseffo Zarlino's musical theory of proportion from his Le istitutioni harmoniche (1558). This mean-tone system, based on pure major thirds, has shaped music for centuries. Klaus Lang's piece uses an expanded historical system in which as many pure thirds as possible are tuned and the number of notes per octave is increased to 19.
The proportional relationship of the major third (4 to 5) is also prominently reflected in early Baroque architecture. This can be seen, for example, in Giovanni Pietro de Pomis' (1565-1633) design for Schloss Eggenberg, the UNESCO World Heritage Site in Graz - Austria, which constitutes another source of inspiration for emblemata sonantes. As a ‘calendar house’ dating from 1625, it meticulously replicates architectural mathematical principles of order such as calendar arrangements.
The third historical reference point is the thinking of Don Diego Saavedra y Faxardo (1584–1648). In his Idea de un Príncipe Político Christiano, the Spanish diplomat and writer attempts to draw up a catalogue of values for the ideal ruler, and does so in countless emblemata: picture puzzles in which an illustration with a short Latin motto is intended to convey the basic values of this world view. emblemata sonantes quotes nine such images. And Klaus Lang asks: How do I make my decisions today as a composer? How does my work reflect both the world in which I live and the worldview and image of humanity of today? To what extent can aspects of the connection between thought and art from the 17th century be fruitful again today?

Klaus Langs Komposition emblemata sonantes. ist zeitgenössische Musik für historisches Instrumentarium und entstand für das Ensemble ĀRT HOUSE 17. Die Komposition nimmt vielfältig Bezug auf die Kunst-, Musik- und Geistesgeschichte.
Zum ersten ganz konkret darin, dass sie auf Gioseffo Zarlinos musikalische Proportionenlehre aus dessen Le istitutioni harmoniche (1558) verweist. Dieses mitteltönige, auf reinen großen Terzen beruhende System hat die Musik für Jahrhunderte geprägt. Klaus Langs Werk verwendet ein erweitertes historisches System, in dem möglichst viele reine Terzen eingestimmt und die Anzahl der Töne pro Oktave auf 19 vergrößert werden.
Das Proportionsverhältnis der großen Terz (4 zu 5) spiegelt sich auch in frühbarocker Architektur prominent wider. So unter anderem in Giovanni Pietro de Pomis (1565-1633) Konzeption von Schloss Eggenberg, dem UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe in Graz, das eine weitere Inspiration für emblemata sonantes. darstellt. Denn als „Kalenderhaus“ aus dem Jahr 1625 bildet es architektonisch mathematische Ordnungsprinzipien wie Kalenderordnungen minutiös nach.
Der dritte historische Anknüpfungspunkt ist das Denken von Don Diego Saavedra y Faxardo (1584-1648). Der spanische Diplomat und Schriftsteller versucht in seinen Idea de un Príncipe Político Christiano einen Wertekatalog für den idealen Herrschenden zu entwerfen und tut dies in zahllosen Emblemata: Bildrätsel, in denen eine Illustration mit einem kurzen lateinischen Motto die Grundwerte dieser Weltsicht vermitteln soll. Neun solcher Bilder zitiert emblemata sonantes. Klaus Lang fragt damit: Wie treffe ich heute als Komponist meine Entscheidungen? Wie spiegelt meine Arbeit sowohl die Welt, in der ich lebe, so wie das Weltbild und das Menschenbild der heutigen Zeit wider? Inwieweit können Aspekte der Verbindung aus Denken und Kunst aus dem 17. Jahrhundert auch heute wieder fruchtbar werden?
